How To Keep Cool In Melbourne This Summer

This hot, humid weather seems to be relentless and as we all know, it’s only gonna get hotter before it gets cooler! Here are a few ways to stave off the heat – or at least distract yourself with some delicious cooling morsels and bevvies.

Good Heavens

The former Tuscan Bar site in Bourke St has been taken over by the Fancy Hanks BBQ team to make your summer just that little bit more awesome. Good Heavens has all the 80s-inspired cocktails (think blue curacao and mini umbrellas) of your kitsch-flavoured dreams and delicious barbecue snacks such as spicy chicken ribs, chilli nachos and a smoked lamb neck grilled cheese to accompany your icy cold drinks. Nothing like a rooftop bar either to feel less bad about your over-productive sweat glands.

Henry Sugar

Head to the newly opened Henry Sugar bar and let their House Spritz cool your ailing limbs! Made with a Rondo organic aperitif and served with a kalamata ice-cream “olive”, this cocktail is deadset on helping you survive the heat. Or if you’re looking for a cooling dessert, why not order their Coconut custard ($14), coconut granita with mirin and citrus sorbet. Tres enjoyable on a summer night, that’s for sure.

Girls and Boys Fitzroy

Serving vegan ice cream, soft serve and other desserts to the overheated plant-based masses, Girls and Boys Fitzroy is the team behind Vegie Bar and Transformer’s latest vego venture. While we’re partial to dairy and all the meats here, we can definitely appreciate innovative icy concoctions such as rum, caramel and miso-flavoured gelato and vegan soft serve covered with baklava-inspired toppings. YEP YES PLS.

Betty’s Burgers

This Noosa favourite is now open in Melbourne and has brought its house-made custom-mixed frozen custard along with them (!!!!!). With indulgent mix-ins such as chocolate-chip cookie dough and Persian fairy-floss, you’re probably going to have to check it out a few times just to be sure of what your favourite combo is. If frozen custard concretes aren’t your thing, get a deliciously dense thickshake in caramel, strawberry or a heavenly, chunky chocolate-peanut-butter flavour.
